Clear vs white vinyl stickers: what changes?
| Your choice | White vinyl | Clear vinyl |
|---|---|---|
| Base material | Opaque white vinyl. | Transparent clear vinyl. |
| Unprinted areas | The white base remains visible. | The surface underneath shows through. |
| Background behind the artwork | The base separates the design from the surface below. | The surface below becomes part of the overall appearance. |
Choose white when you want a consistent base
White vinyl is a practical starting point for logos, illustrations and designs that need a white background. It gives the artwork its own base instead of relying on the color of the object beneath it.
If the same design will go on several differently colored objects, an opaque base makes that background choice more consistent. The file still needs readable type and clear contrast.
Choose clear when the background is part of the idea
Clear vinyl works for artwork where an opaque white background is not part of the design. The unprinted areas can reveal glass, packaging or another surface underneath.
Consider the actual surface before choosing. A design that is easy to read over a light background may be harder to read over a dark or busy one. Printed color and opacity depend on the artwork and production specifications.
Transparent does not mean cut away
A transparent area is still part of the clear vinyl. It is not a hole. The material choice and the cut shape are separate decisions; die cut and kiss cut describe the cut and backing.
Keep the intended transparency in your artwork. A white rectangle baked into a JPG does not become transparent just because you choose clear vinyl. Review your file and preview before approving the project.
What about gloss or matte?
The base material and finish are separate choices. Read the matte vs glossy guide, then choose from the options available for your product in the configurator.
